About UP

  • Free Worldwide License – “UP” is available for free, under an unlimited license, to all planetariums around the world. The exclusive distributor of the film is Creative Planet.
  • A Story of Determination – No one ever said the climb to the top would be easy. Sometimes the goal feels distant and uncertain, and its cost is higher than we expected. In our rush for success, blinded by ambition, we often forget that our actions affect more than just our own lives.
“UP” is a short, tense, parable-like story about determination, persistence, and the thin line between striving for a goal and losing yourself in the process. Viewers are drawn into a surreal world where the main character climbs winding concrete stairs that seem to stretch on forever. These endless steps become a metaphor for life’s journey, full of struggle and sacrifice. The climb is long and tiring, and each step takes more effort than the last. It feels as if the hero is fighting not just his own fatigue and doubts, but something deeper. What really is the goal he’s chasing? And will his efforts bring the reward he seeks?
  • Early Stop-Motion Roots – The story of this film goes back many years. At first, “UP” was planned as a stop-motion piece on a regular flat screen. Early sets were already made then—hand-painted backdrops, plexiglass stairs, and figures built from wire and a soft, bendable material. The shapes were inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s thin, striking sculptures “L’Homme qui marche,” which stand for a lone journey through the emptiness of life.
  • Immersive 3D Dome Experience – Even though that original version was never finished, the project was reborn in a new, more powerful form. The film was made in 3D graphics for full-dome screens, opening up fresh visual ideas and creating a fully surrounding experience. Detailed sound effects and an original musical score, composed just for this film, enhance the journey. It’s an audio-visual trip that moves you, makes you think, and asks you to reflect on yourselves, your desires, and where you’re really headed.
