Shawn A. Laatsch

President (2017-2018) of the International Planetarium Society, Versant Power Astronomy Center and the Maybard Jordan Planetarium Manager at The University of Maine

Engaging Young Minds with “Magic Globe”

A University of Maine’s planetarium success story, highlighting vibrant audience engagement, curriculum integration for K-12 students, and strong community connection through innovative marketing and exceptional customer service.

What is your planetarium profile, its business model and who is your customer?

Our planetarium is located on the grounds of the University of Maine and serves k-12 students, university classes, and the general public. Our facility has a 10 meter dome on a 15 degree tilt with 50 seats, and has a Sky-Skan 4K projection system with 5.1 surround sound system.  The planetarium  is a “cost recovery” unit of the university meaning we have to fund all of our operations by ticket and gift shop sales.  We serve around 10,000 visitors a year with about 60% being from k-12 schools.  As we are in a small community, we change our shows monthly (public shows on Fridays at 7pm for general audiences, Sundays at 2pm for family ones).

What is the feedback from the audience on Magic Globe?

Visitors who have come to Magic Globe have really enjoyed it and love the characters, especially Mia, her dog and her grandfather. We have had excellent response to the show typically running it once a year in our monthly family slot, and for special school breaks. We also make it available to teachers as well.

Do you have any feedback from the teachers?

Our local teachers do find it fits their curriculum on seasons quite well, and have been happy the show engages students in a fun way. Many have said they think the story aids students in retaining the key concepts of the tilt of the Earth and how it is responsible for the seasons we experience. It is probably our 4th or 5th most popular school show for elementary students.

what is the attendance at the film? How could you compare it to the rest of the program you have? Is the show in the top 3 popular shows you screen/screened?

When we show it for our monthly family offering attendance has been between 75-85% on average with a few sell out shows (100% of tickets). In terms of our family offering it is probably our 3rd or 4th most popular offering. Magic Treehouse:Space Mission – which is an old show, but is based on a book series has been our most popular.

How do you advertise the movie? Is it easy to sell?

Most of our marketing is via social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). We also do some print and digital ads in our local newspaper, and of course use our website to promote the show.

How long did it take for the movie to pays back? Did it pay back already?

We had some initial sponsorship for the program which helped as with our small theater size and limited run, it typically takes 4 or 5 years for most shows to break even to the license cost. We have been very happy with the show!

How would you rate the purchase process and our customer service?

Excellent customer service, which is why I keep coming back and pre-bought The Stellars. I really like Creative Planet’s programs and highly recommend them to planetarium directors who are looking for great content for their domes.

Featured Case Study Interview #2:

Manos Kitsonas

Director in Eugenides Planetarium, Athens.

"Magic Globe" Shines at Eugenides

Athens' Planetarium Draws Crowds with Its Educational Show, praised for its engaging story and clear messages about the Seasons. It's a favorite for kids and teachers, proving to be a success from the start, thanks to great support and easy collaboration.

What is your planetarium profile, its business model and who is your customer?

The Eugenides Planetarium is one of the biggest and best Planetariums in the world. It focuses on educational shows regarding astronomy, space exploration and technology. It first opened in 1966 as a classic Zeiss flat Planetarium. In 2003, after a major renovation the 278 seats New Digital Planetarium opened under a 24,5 m dome with a digital fulldome system and has been upgraded many times since then to the latest digital technology. It is considered a landmark in Athens. Every year more than 200.000 visitors watch the many shows available in the program, both school children and general public.

What is the feedback from the audience on Magic Globe?

The audience loves the Magic Planet show. It is a show made for domes. Children easily connect with the basic character of Mia and follow the storyline closely. They get to understand some basic things regarding seasons and earth’s tilt. The best thing though is that they get the importance of preserving the environment and how all life is connected on Earth! Also the feedback is top about the animation quality and storyline.

Do you have any feedback from the teachers?

Teachers find great educational value in the show because it clearly illustrates the uniqueness of Earth as the only home for humanity, in an engaging way. It also features the issues of seasons, climate and how they relate to life on Earth as we know it, in a basic but at the same time very attractive way.

what is the attendance at the film? How could you compare it to the rest of the program you have? Is the show in the top 3 popular shows you screen/screened?

The attendance has been very strong with the young children groups and families with children (5 to 10 years old). In the first season we used it as our prime show for children and we had a capacity of more than 60% average. In the second season it still goes strong although it is not programmed in the most attractive time slots. Last season it was our top show.

How do you advertise the movie? Is it easy to sell?

We advertise mainly through social media. Also, last year when we opened the show, we had an official premiere event which attracted lots of media attention. As a great educational show it is an easy one to sell to the family audience.

How long did it take for the movie to pays back? Did it pay back already?

It paid back easily from the first season already.

How would you rate the purchase process and our customer service?

The purchase process and all customer service were top. We had a very smooth agreement process and the company was very supportive in every one of our requests regarding various issues (marketing materials, versioning materials etc.).

Stunning Visuals

The movie is available in Fulldome 8K. Its stunning visuals have been created by the artists involved in such well-received Fulldome productions as “Dream to Fly,” “Hello Earth,” and “Explore.”

Trailer is available also in fulldome version: https://vimeo.com/429784915
